Sweet Shot Tuesday

It’s falling into that time of year here in the midwest. The holidays are past, snow is no longer novel. It’s cold. And not the pleasant chill kind of cold, I mean the make-yer-bones-ache and lungs burn kind of cold. It would take a very, very good reason to get me outdoors.

I’ve been told the southerners have a season like this in reverse, where it’s so stinkin’ hot you just can’t leave.

And it forces you to get creative with your camera. You simply can’t shoot mild twilights, and grass in toes, and pretty colors of nature, full bins of ripe fruit at the farmer’s market, and happy faces of those you love if the weather is insufferable.

So what do you like to shoot when this kind of weather keeps you prisoner in your home?

toes in tubs

Cozy mugs of cocoa, warm socks peeking out from blankets, baked goods, the steam from your morning coffee, tubs of bubbles as you thaw (and *ahem* sip wine), kids in snow suits or still in pjs, their little hands coloring pictures or turning pages…

Maybe if we all throw in a few ideas, together we’ll have enough inspiration to make it through til spring. You southerners can tuck these ideas away til July and August. ;)

Can’t wait to see what you’ve been shooting this week.

I don’t think I am brave enough for my camera and the tub. Even though I have insurance, I don’t think I want to hear my husband talk about it FOR-EV-ER. Maybe phone camera.
Great idea for a shot. It is hard to have inspiration this time of year.

  2. During our winter months…with or without snow…I buy flowers at the grocery store. Then I shoot hundreds of photos. I even experiment now and then, and my latest involved shooting my bunches of tulips with a 55-250 mm zoom lens in my living room. I managed some interesting shots. (No tubbing here….I’m a shower gal, and I don’t think a camera would be a good choice!)

    It’s a phone cam.

Since my camera is my livelihood, it’s not invited into the tub. ;)

    so true, love the toes!

Novel idea! You are dedicated! :)

i love those little tootsies! :)

i was just thinking this yesterday…
sometimes i get desperate and shoot crazy things,
    like the dog’s food dish
    or cracks in the pavement.
    yes i do.
    sad.

any chance you are headed to blissdom?

    • Darcy says:

I think it’s creative. Anyone who can make a dish of dog food look artistic has my vote. ;)

No, Blissdom for me. I will be heading to Relevant In PA in October. Last year was such a great conference, and I’m shooting it again this year. Would love to see you there!

Great shot and very interesting topic. My grandkids and I have been enjoying fort-tastic fun as they keep coming up with all new forts and hiding places out of all the gi-normous couch pillows in my two couch set. They never tire of making forts and I am continually amazed at all the different configurations they can come up with. I WAS going to do an article about it complete with photos from my digital camera – when I discovered, GASP, Picnik.com is shutting down in 3 months and it has already changed enough that it was a struggle working with it yesterday! So the best laid plans of this Sandwich Generation granny nanny went down the tube, the article was set aside and I did another all about this! I’m very techy but photo editors have always been a weak spot of mine once they graduated from my beloved MacPaint to the more advanced and challenging layers programs. Do you have any ultra-simple suggestions you’ve heard of Darcy? I’m really praying for wisdom on this one, that’s for SURE! Thanks for all your great tips and a sweet shoulder to “cry” on :) – stay warm!

    • Darcy says:

You’re not alone in worrying about Picnik. It’s purportedly moving to g+ rather that going away absolutely, but I’ve heard the changes will be noticeable.

Ps Elements is supposed to be much easier to learn than Photoshop. My friend Amanda Padgett offers classes and tutorials at her blog – Everyday Elements. http://everydayelementsonline.com/

It’s not free, but it’s inexpensive compared to Photoshop!

I love the perspective on this one. While it’s a warmer than usual winter for us- it’s still cold to me being a native of So Cal- so anything that is warm & inviting tops my list these days & gets my attention. Come summer- I won’t be able to venture outside much- & the photos will certainly reflect that.

  9. Laura says:

I recently moved to an area of the country where the weather is currently in the 60s, so I’m trying to get outside as much as possible now because come June-September, when the temperature will spike to 100+, I’m not going to want to leave the house! I’m definitely going to have to remember these ideas then! :D

A hot bath on a cold winters day… one of my all time favourite things.

Yup, you nailed it on the head! We are having beautiful temperatures right now (I’m in Central TX) with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. But come summertime it is putrid. There are some days that I don’t take my boys outside until after the sun sets.

  12. Ashley says:

What a perfect shot. It definitely evokes feelings of warmth and coziness and comfort in a season that has very little of that! Thank you for sharing. :)

  13. I don’t know how you did it. But, you just made winter in the north sound better than it really is. I grew up in the midwest and now reside in the south. It’s another dry 60s to 70s day here. You are so right about summer down here. IT is quite miserable.

  14. I’ve never linked up with a recipe before, but I really want to improve my food photography. Any helpful tips and advice is mucho appreciated! Thanks for letting us link up!

Check out the work of Penny de los Santos and Hannah Singer…
both are beautiful food photographers. I love their blogs and food photos!

  15. simply adorable! :)

  16. Just found out about this party so it’s the first time I’ve linked up here. Thanks for hosting. Love your toes in the bathtub photo!
