You’ve been telling yourself you want to get to know your camera better. You’ve been looking for a challenge that will push you, motivate you, but one that’s not impossible to stick with. 365 is too demanding; you need a smaller dose.
Something that will force you to use your photography muscles…
Something with a variety of ideas to push your creativity…
Announcing…

I’d like to run things a bit different from last year. First, I’d like to use the blog instead of Flickr. I’ll have a link on Fridays. Once a month I’d like to feature some of the really interesting, inspirational, or exemplary images here at the blog – with links to the artist so we can all get to know them better. By request there will be 52 specific challenges. We will be assigned themes for each week. You may interpret them with whatever artistic license you wish to employ.
Details:
- Participating in p52 means you have a blog or Flickr stream to link back to.
- You agree to use permalinks to the p52 post / image only.
- Photo must be taken within the past 7 days – digging up old photo defeats the challenge.
- Linking at p52 implies you may be featured here at m3b, with proper credit and acknowledgement of your work, and you agree that I may use your week’s image to show your work. All featured images will have a link to the artist’s blog or Flickr stream.
- Amateur and professional artists are welcome, but any signs of abuse or misuse or inappropriate photos will be banned.
I really don’t like to play bad cop, so let’s make this FUN, high energy… and something that you will actually challenge yourself to make the most out of that amazing camera you have.
Ready for the first few weeks’ assignments?
Week 1 – ending Friday, January 6: Resolution
Week 2 – ending Friday, January 13: Made with love
Week 3 – ending Friday, January 20: I Dreamed A Dream
Week 4 – ending Friday, January 27: Self-portrait
Week 5 – ending Friday, February 3: Shadows
Week 6 – ending Friday, February 10: Drink up!
Week 7 – ending Friday, February 17: True Love
Week 8 – ending Friday, February 24: Cabin Fever
Suggestions for future weeks can be left over on the m3b Facebook page where I’ve started taking requests! Please suggest theme ideas there.
I cannot wait to see how you all interpret these challenges, and I look forward to getting to meet new photographers!
Happy New Year!

I would love to try this challenge. I just got a Canon Rebel for Christmas and am expecting my 3rd baby on Tuesday (induction). So, I will be taking a lot of pictures. I really want to learn how to use it properly to get fabulous photos, so this is perfect for me. Can’t wait to start! Thanks for putting this together.
~Nicole
so excited! Thanks for giving us a heads up on themes a few weeks out.
Thank you for moving this to your blog!!! I copied the assignments-can’t wait!
This is a challenge I think that I can actually keep up with. I like the idea of themes too. It makes it more fun.
I’m going to take the plunge and join in this year!
I tried a 365 last year and it was too much. The prompts already have the creative juices flowing. Thank you for doing this again this year Darcy!
I’m so glad you’re doing this through blogs this year. I started a Flickr account for P52, but ended up not finishing. It was an extra step and made me wanna put it off. It will be so much easier for me to work from my blog. Can’t wait to meet new bloggers and learn something new in 2012!
I’m so excited that you’ve decided to do this again! I truly enjoyed the P52 last year and I have 52 weekly photographs to show for it. In fact, I had the first 45 published in a photo book (there was a sale), and I’ll most likely order a photo book that includes the 52. Themes will be a stretch for me, I know, but I think I’m ready. Thank you!
I think it’s so awesome that you have a book of the year’s photos. I absolutely love the idea!
I just made up my book of all my pictures today. I missed one week due to health reasons but feel really good that I can look back at the 51 pictures and remember the year. I’m looking forward to the challenge of themes, although I agree, they will stretch me!
Oooh I love this idea. I am going to try and do this for sure! Love it!
One question – Does this mean, for instance – the one for Jan 6th, is the post going to be that day on here? And that is the day we create the link up? So the picture would need to be taken in the 7 days prior to Jan 6th then? Just want to confirm so I can plan this out!
Thanks!
Yes, so the photo you link up next week will have been shot in these next 7 days, and posted next Friday. Etc. so our shooting weeks run Sat-Fri.
Hopefully that’s clearer. I may need to clarify that in the post.
Thanks! I can’t wait to do this!
Sweet, sounds like fun!
I’ll be joining in this year also! Love the ideas for each week…thanks!
This is my first ever project. I’ll be joining also. Just hope I can keep up.
Yay! Have been combing the internet looking for something like this. I’m in!
I just received a new camera for Christmas and want to learn how to use it. I have never done a project like this before and am excited about the opportunity. Thanks!
Would really love to play along – I promise to try
Happy New Year from N Ireland.
kinda wish this was just for amateurs.. it’s tough to have to see the professionals pics all the time… especially when you’re just starting out…
Are really *really* amateurs welcome? I am such a beginner that I sort of cringe at sharing my photos, but I would love to participate to stretch my creativity and also develop my skills.
Sheila,
We can be really “really” amateurs together. I got my first DSLR for Christmas and am very nervous about posting my photos too, but I know it will only help me get better.
I’m in, Darcy!! I’ll have to dig up my camera manual once and for all!
so excited for this!
I’m up for the challenge. Do you have a button I/we can put in our posts to link back like the project 52 image above?
I’m going to give this one a thought for sure. I have a Canon Rebel that I have continuously told myself I must “learn how to use.” It’s hard to do that when I rarely pick up the darn thing.
I think I would be able to manage this challenge though. Such a positive resolution, too. Never hurts to have more pictures!!
How fun! I love this idea.
I am certainly as ameteur as they come, but would love to join in to work my photography muscle and keep me busy during my husband’s deployment! I look forward to it
I may have to join in. I need a change from my self-portrait 52 Week Project for the past 2 years! Looking forward to meeting new photogs too.
Very excited about this challenge!
i like it!
I’ve been thinking about my 2012 goals (I hate the word resolution- so…resolute and to much to live up to) and I am adding p52 to the list!!! Thanks so much!
I love this idea! I was toying with a Project 365 idea using just my iPhone, but I thought there was a better than average chance that I would end up quitting by February. This is definitely much more manageable.
ok, so this is kinda scary…
but
i’ll take up the challenge!
Woohoo! I am excited to start!
i love these kind of projects! so much inspiration! count me in.
This sounds fun!
This is so cool, Darcy! What a great motivation for us to get intimate with our DSLRs. By the way, do you have a button for the link up?
Darcy,
I am the ‘amateur’ you speak of without the fancy camera and photo operations but love taking pictures. I need help “linking up” to my blog so you can get to it/see it. Can you e-mail me?
I’m excited for this……and to get started!!!
Yippee!!!! I am so excited about this! I literally made the goal for myself last week to attempt to take one “good” picture a week – (good being defined as something I would be proud to post on my blog). So I was pretty stoked to read about your challenge. Thanks for the great idea!
I would really like to do this challenge but am completely clueless on the link and blog part. Can someone guide me? Not thinking my pictures will turn out anything worth seeing but I am extremely interested on being able to see everyone else’s so I can learn! Like others on here I just got a new Rebel and want to explore and learn how to use it!.
this was just what I was looking for, thanks so much, looking forward to it
I’m in, have been using these last days to look for new photo challenges cleaning up my google reader want to be challenged so i’m also looking for some blogs that are more teaching as well, any ideas??
In 2011 I discovered my love for food blogging…and photographing food. Unfortunately it was to the neglect of taking pictures of my family! I am going to give this a shot.
I want to try this. Gives me more of a reason to learn how to use my new camera. Just a mid-range p&s; baby steps to the SLR.
