Rock whatcha got: Using ACR to Fix Color Casts | 31 Days of Photo Tips, day 24

Lightroom is a fantastic way, loaded with sliders and quick fixes, for color correcting and fixing color casts. But at $299 the price may be cost-prohibitive for photographers, especially if they’ve already invested in Adobe Photoshop.

The good news is that Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and Bridge usually come bundled with the Ps software, so if you own Photoshop it’s likely that you already own the perfect solution to quickly and easily fix color issues in your photos.

Wanna know a secret, by the way?

I own Lightroom and ACR. I use ACR daily. I haven’t opened Lightroom in ummmm… I can’t remember the last time I opened my Lr program. As soon as I realized how seamlessly Bridge, ACR and Photoshop work together there was no turning back for me.

Bridge – in versions past – was buggy and crashed a lot. Lots has changed and Bridge CS5 works beautifully to manage files. ACR works quicky to make batch edits in seconds, reducing my time in Photoshop by a ton. And let’s face it… Who wants to be sitting at the computer editing photos for hours and hours??

Have you ever tried Photoshop’s little sister, ACR? If you experiment with it, I’d love to see how it goes. Feel free to come back and share the link to your before-and-afters using ACR.

I just began using ACR a month or so ago, and I didn’t even know that I could do batch edits! Great tip and video today.

I’ve known it was there…just been nervous to take the first step. Thanks for the inspiration…I’m on my way right now to my new adventure!

Really want to learn how to do batch edits. So I am excited you will be covering that too. So was this a raw or jpg image? I didn’t know you could right click and open in ACR. I was opening the image from PS and choosing the ACR option. SO glad I can get there from Bridge. I’m loving all these little tidbits Darcy, thank you! And I loved hearing your voice! For some reason reading your tweets, your voice doesn’t sound like that in my head! LOL

  4. So much info here. Can’t wait to start using it.

  5. Are guys allowed to comment, too? ;-) I have Ps and ACR, but have recently moved to using Aperture for workflow so my wife feels more comfortable editing RAW and exporting jpgs for her site. It’s working out pretty good for the trial version of an $80 program. I love working with Br and Ps, but just trying to get a multi-computer system going to where we don’t have to edit the photos on each system, so I think putting the Aperture library file on Dropbox may work out when I give that a shot in a couple of days. Loving my new T2i and am up to ~2000 photos in 2 weeks. Niagara Falls helped that LOT!

YAY!!! After watching this videa I said to myself “DUH!!! Why didn’t I think of that in the first place?!” Thank you SO much :D

  8. my bridge from cs5 crashes all the time. it says something about clearing the cache, but when i do that it doesn’t help. it’s so frustrating.

    • Darcy says:

I’ve heard that from others, too. But not usually with CS5. I know both Photoshop and Bridge get a little cranky when they don’t have a lot of free memory to play with.

Since I shoot in RAW, I am constantly juggling memory space. Right now, for example… ;)
