For reasons you may not be able to explain, there will be photos you love – caught when you least expect it.

“Wonder” – 50mm f/1.4 – ISO 640 – f/1.4 – 1/30 sec – SOOC
Because 10 year old boys are hard to impress.
Because wonder does have an expression.
Because it will never be new again.
Because now when he looks at that exhibit, his face echoes known familiarity.
Because it’s almost a miracle to get that shot in that lighting situation, shooting that slowly, hand held.
How can you be prepared for once-in-a-lifetime moments?
In your bag:
extra battery
extra memory cards
white balance expo disk, lens cap or gray card
reflector
In hand:
camera with fully charged battery
fresh memory card
Tip: It’s good practice at the end of each shoot to zero out your camera. Make sure your settings are back to a normal – raw or jpg – however you shoot, ISO back to 100 or 200, white balance back to auto, color compensation and exposure compensation back to 0.
If there is ever a moment where you need to quickly grab the camera, if you’re always zeroed out you’ll know how to react quickly. Don’t miss that precious reaction fumbling with your settings!

Love that expression!
Oh my, I just love this! Thanks Darcy. I’ve so enjoyed this series. You are must amazing!
Wow, that is practically a miracle shot! Great work and I love this series!
Great expression! Sometimes I just want to kick myself for leavin’ the camera at home!
Great, simple advice about “zeroing” out the camera that I learned the hard way several times. Thank you for this (as usual!) great series!! I have learned a lot!
This is EXCELLENT advice. I have definitely missed shots before because I’m fumbling with settings from yesterday’s shoot! So simple and yet so brilliant.
Thank you!
You are so right about reformatting your camera. I often forget to do this although it is just one of the hazards of being so creative.

Hi Darcy, I know you’ve mentioned reflectors a few times. Is there one you would recommend? I want to put it on my list for Santa
Yes – here is a link to the one I like, in this post: http://my3boybarians.com/2011/10/supplement-available-light-31-days-of-photo-tips-day-8/
Merry Christmas to you!
