1-1-11

A date like that just begs to be blogged, doesn’t it? Since it’s not likely I’ll see 1-1-2111, this is my once-in-a-lifetime 1-1-11.

Twitter and Facebook are buzzing about resolutions, commitments and weight loss. People are making business plans and talking taxes (over-achievers!). The slate is clean and 2011 is your oyster.

‘Cept I don’t like oysters, so I’m going to change it to “2011 is your PW’s mashed potatoes” or “2011 is your chocolate chip cookie” or something more awesome than oysters.

There is also a lot of buzz about P365. What is P365?
It stands for Project 365 – one photo a day for a year. It’s a super ambitious project that requires tons of discipline. I did one in 2007, and I loved the photos, but by about July it started to feel cumbersome and duti-full. Is dutiful a word? While I love the idea of being pushed to take photos, the everydayness of it was tough.

So, I’m committing to P52 and inviting you to do it with me. Those of you who already participate in Sweet Shot Tuesday have it made – you can double dip if you want. But wouldn’t it be cool to have a weekly summary of your 2011?

It lets you off the hook a little bit. I mean how many times does it get to be 10pm and you’re like, ‘oh crap! I didn’t take my picture of the day?’ Then you end up photographing your slippers or your microwave clock or something. Which, I mean – don’t get me wrong – could be cool. But isn’t the point to challenge yourself? ( I have about 8 photos of my kitchen sink from 2007. witw?!)

By limiting it to one really thoughtful image a week, you will have challenged yourself to get 52 well-done photos, instead of 50some decent photos and 310some photos of your slippers. Right?

Project 52 - m3b P52

Now, if you’ve committed to P365 (over-achiever!) you are still welcome to participate with your fav from the week.

The best part – it’s done completely on Flickr so it won’t require you to use up a day on your blog if you don’t want it to. That’s what I love about Flickr groups – tons of encouragement, no blog posts! Please get your photos on by the end of Sunday each week.

The group is open to anyone. Invite your friends. Invite your family. Invite the neighbor’s cousin’s dog’s groomer’s sister! I am also looking for volunteers (maybe 2?) who would like to help moderate the group.
Requirements: active on Flickr, willingness to participate and check in at least weekly. Moderate discussions, remove nekkedness or questionable images. Offer encouragement. Let me know in comments or via email if you’re interested. We can call you Cap’n or Boss or Head Cheese, or something.

Feel free to snag that graphic if you want to invite people to participate or link to your p52 Flickr photos.

That’s it! P52 – a less-ambitious P365. For busy people. For lazy people. For perfectionists. For YOU.

Happy 2011, friends. You really made 2010 awesome, and I am grateful for each of you.

I always found the 365 things a little intimidating, but I could handle one a week! ;-)

  4. You stole my idea for the exact same reasons! Seriously, I’ll be joining you from afar – thanks for the motivation!
