One of the important things, I believe, about embracing photography – either with hopes to shoot professionally, or only if to make the most of your favorite hobby – is education.
Many new photographers assume if they buy the same camera that __(insert fav photog here)___ has, then their photos will look like ______’s photos. How many of you bought a camera because _________ had it? How many of you still notice your images don’t look like ________’s images?
Yeah. Mine either.
So? That means we actually have to spend time like good little learners, in instruction, practicing, watching, learning, trying. Only then, can we hope to have images that are our own brand, but hopefully just as good as __________’s.
Today, I want to tell you about Creative Live.

The premises is basically this: The Creative Live team gathers industry greats to teach their strongest skills – photography, photoshop, painting… there are lots of classes. They record these sessions, turn them into DVDs and sell them so you can buy them and learn at your leisure. But here’s the catch – if you can catch it LIVE, while the sessions are happening, it is absolutely FREE to watch and learn online.
This week, photographer Jasmine Star will be teaching, then shooting a wedding live while the world watches. And you can watch and learn, too. If you’re not able to tune in, the DVDs will be available for purchase soon after.
So, it’s your turn to link up – and if you’d like to share in the comments – what’s your favorite resource for educating yourself about photography, photoshop or the business behind being a successful photographer? Don’t forget to link back to Sweet Shot Tuesday so your readers can play, too. Thanks! Can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to!

i am a HUGE fan of jasmine star.. and that’s sooo awesome they have free LIVE classes! i will definitely have to tune in so i can learn!! one of my main resources for photography tips is your blog and scott bourne’s as well!
Looks like a pretty awesome site!
I’m always absorbing and tweaking… I’ve learned from MANY sources! NYIP, BetterPhoto, DPS… to name a few. I also read posts by other photographers. I’ll never be able to say I’m THERE!! There will ALWAYS be more to learn!! I am inspired by so many AWESOME people here in the BLOGOSPHERE!! I’m NOT worthy!! LOL!! (((HUGS)))
I have just heard about CreativeLive, and I will definitely purchase their dvds. I am subscribed to PhotoVision. Right now they are having a sale for $39 for the entire year. You get a dvd every other month. The material has been fantastic. As professional photographers, you can never learn too much, As hobbiest, you can never learn too much!

I’ve taken local classes, online classes and read as much as I can to try to learn about photography. I also am not afraid to ask questions of other photographers on their blogs if I really want to know something. Most have been positive and have shared answers with me. I keep it brief and concise.
Thanks for sharing this resource! I love Jasmine’s work, but would never be able to go to CA for one of her workshops!
Wow! Thanks for the great heads up. I’ll definitely look into it. And thanks again for another delightful Sweet Shot Tuesday. I really appreciate all your great tips to help me with my digital camera as I capture sweet family memories of my grandkids. It may be easy to use, but your extra tips make it even better. Thank you!
I learn so much from other photographers and from sites like Clickin Moms, Pioneer Woman, Flickr and I Heart Faces…I also try to read anything I can when I think that I need to work on something…thanks for the inspiration that I always find here as well~
Hi Darcy. I love Jasmine Star’s work! The thing is, she has mentioned before on her blog, that very same thing. Dealing with the fact that your work doesn’t look like _______’s. I am so excited to hear about CreativeLive. How exciting to be able to watch as it is all explained.
Thanks for hosting again this week.

Love your blog! And what you said in this post is so true! Practice makes perfect, I use all kinds of online sources…can’t name all the ones I’ve read through to find my way to the images I’m producing now but looking back my photography has improved by leaps and bounds when compared to my first month or two with my camera. It’s not the equipment, it’s the person behind it..and everyone’s opinion and outlook and perspective is different in what they like to photograph. I love hands-on learning too, when I have a friend or two who can share their expertise with me and I greatly appreciate that as well!
I’m so thrilled you shared the info on Creative Live. Thank you!
I love to look at blogs and find styles of photography I love (macro, natural light, non-posed, etc) and learn from them. Everyone has such a different prespective and it’s fun to take it all in!
There are some really beautiful photos this week… thank you!
My pictures don’t look like ______, but I still keep clicking… thanks for the tips and the inspiration:)
Darcy, does my submission have to be on a blog or can it be on Flicker? I tried linking to Flicker and it isn’t working. Thanks!
Hi Krystal –
Sure absolutely. Just same rules apply – please link to the photo URL itself, not the whole Flickr stream. We’ve had several participate from Flickr. Think it’s a great idea!
Funny you should ask…your blog (and others like yours) are where I have learned a great deal about photography. I also enjoy checking out books from my local library…reading the manual for my camera helped a bunch, too.
i like to shoot and shoot and shoot, even if i end up deleting every single one. and i always carry my camera manual w me, so that i can learn as i make my mistakes. i also like to paruse through others’ works, and determine what i like and don’t…
i should have read this this morning. Today was my kids first day at school. I laid on the coach the better part of the day. I could have been watching this online! This is great! I’m just getting going with the D90. I learned for a year watching Trish and listening to her. I have soooo much more to go! Thanks for sharing this great way to learn!!!
Just found your blog through the nester. Love it. I am trying my hand at photography, and look forward to what your blog teaches me.
Thanks!
