Moral of the story?

We’re driving back from a shoot Saturday, and the sky becomes so brilliant it looks like it’s taken flame. I’ve seen skies like this before, and always wished I had my camera on me. This time I did, but we’re in Des Moines traffic – while nothing like congestion of a major metropolis, does have us trapped at lights and behind a trail of cars. The colors, I knew would be gone in less than five minutes.

My first lame attempts have me shooting out the open window of my moving vehicle. Yeah, those shots are awesome.

HandyMan, in a stroke of genius, pulls into a parking lot with a parking garage and drives at one of those “kids, never do what daddy is doing right now” speeds up the ramp to the top floor. We run out and click, click, click. Three minutes later, it was gone. The sky was extinguished.

In those three minutes, though – we got this. This is actually 7 SOOC images merged into a single image. The actual file is over 10,000 pixels wide and about 3,000 pixels tall. This file, for the web has been reduced to 1024 x 300, lest I implode the internets. Click to see a bigger res image.

Moral of the story?

Always, always carry your camera.

**No sunsets were injured photoshopped in the making of this post.

  3. I learned this moral the hard way the other day when I passed one of the horse farms on our way to school and two of the horses were standing on their hind legs, right next to the fence by the road, pawing (hoofing?) and biting at each other! No one was behind me on the road and I could have stopped easily to get a great shot of them. I’ll never leave my camera behind again.

  7. I am learning. The camera is always ready and the kids now tell me to take a picture if they see something nice. Murphy’s Law will make sure that something beautiful will be revealed if you forget it.

Wow. What a shot–or compilation of shots. That’s got to be the real thing–PhotoShop’s not good enough to simulate that, is it?

I’m so glad you captured this image. I’d say that you should most definitely ALWAYS carry your camera.

Yup – that’s the real thing. There is nothing done to these images – not even sharpening. The saturation, everything, is as-shot. The only program assistance was to merge all the images into a single file.

It was a beautifully magical sunset!

      Thanks, Richella! <3

LOVE it!!! Everything about it – the story behind it, the end result, and yes, I ALWAYS have a camera with me. I made a purse for myself awhile back that accommodates my Canon, but if for any reason, I don’t have it, I still carry my cool little Sony p&s. Beautifully done, Darcy!

I am totally in awe. And a little verklempt. This is dynamite!

The Hubs always ribs me a bit about taking the camera wherever we go (worried about theft) but he, and the rest of the fam, are the first to ask me if I got a picture of something! ;0)

  19. Gorgeous! I’m bad about carrying my camera on me always, but I try. I do have an ittsy Photoshop obsession that prevents me from making any photo public unless Photoshopped. I need to get over that.
