Gravatar 101: How do I make my photo appear next to my comment?

Would you all do something for me? Pretty please?

Have you ever noticed in comments how some of you have your bright, smiling picture and some of you have generic quilt-looking things to represent you in your comments? Have you ever wondered how to make your photo appear next to your comments?

Gravatar 101: We want to see your pretty face!

Some people assume that if you have a WordPress blog you have a gravatar and if you use another platform (like Blogger or Typepad) you don’t. This is true if you blog at wordpress.com, but not true for blogs like mine – those that are self-hosted wordpress.org blogs. But, actually, WordPress uses a third party program to make those. It’s associated with an account based on your email address. And anyone on any blogging platform (or even non-bloggers) can have one. This means YOU can be there to represent your comments.

when you’ve done it, you’ll see something that looks like this:

So, go ahead… practice. Go make your account and leave a comment below so you can see your pretty face in action!

  8. I love Gravatar, but I wish I figure out how to include it on my Typepad blog. Does anyone know if there is a plug-in or some code available? Any Typepad gurus out there?

    Please . . . I really want to know! :) Thanks!

Thank you SO MUCH for teaching us how to do this!! I hope it works!! I finally set up an account…also late, but I am going to test it out here…also Darcy, can you tell me the “correct” way you are to leave a comment? Your site magically knows my website & name but many others blogs ask you to “Select a profile” ie: Google account, Name/URL etc. What should you choose if you want to leave your name & blog address & a comment? I am so new to all of this!!

The difference is between Blogger and WP platforms. WordPress will generally remember you until you clear your cache. Blogger may remember you, otherwise you have to pick an account. I am on WordPress, and you should only have to put in your info one time until you clear your cache.

I’m with you, it should be easier! I generally choose Google account, but there is no wrong answer. I vote whatever makes it easiest.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  11. Hmm..mine isn’t showing but when I tried to resend the same one it said it detected that i already had done this…maybe it takes a while?

Alright, I finally did it. I made a gravatar…just because you told me to! Now to see if it works…and I have a question for you…are all of your links set up not to open in a new window? I’m always afraid to click on a link on your blog because I’m afraid it will take me elsewhere and I won’t remember how I even got there! (I spend more time than I should checking out the blogs of your “commenters”!)
I think I have spent the last two days reading all of your tutorials–thanks for all of the great information!

    • Darcy says:

Hold down command-click or control-click. I never set links to open in a new page b/c I myself hate when websites /blogs do that. I prefer to have few browser windows open, so command-click opens it up in a new tab or new window, depending on your settings.

      Glad it’s been helpful1 :)

    Hi Darcy,

I did wonder how to get this done, so I have given it a go. Hopefully my little face will now be next to this comment.
    Cheers
